About the Instructor: May Shei May Shei was born in a HAKKA town in S. Taiwan, and grown in a very artistic family. May Shei (陳菊美) graduated from the Arts and Craft program at Tainan University of Technology (台南家專美工科) and the department of Art at Chinese Culture University (中國文化大學美術系) with a major in Commercial Design and a minor on Oil and Chinese painting. May is an art teacher and professional artist focusing on abstract, linear style, and contemporary art. She brings the richness of her country’s history into her artwork. May’s art blends the traditional techniques of Asian artists before her as well as her contemporary style. May often portrays the creatures of her childhood, now endangered and protected species, as well as ancient figures from Taiwan’s past. Her work examines the abstract and the natural, and the ways in which they collide with our modern world. May’s work blends eastern and Western styles in a contemporary fashion and has received multiple awards in a number of San Francisco Bay Area art competitions, she is an invited and featured artist in many galleries and Museum exhibits. She has held solo art shows in Taiwan, China, and the US. She gets the jury in for 2016 and 2017 Salon d’Automne Paris. BACK

You can see geometric shapes - like the angle at the point of a thorn or the roundness of a thicket of leaves. You can see patterns - like the alignment of tree trunks in a stand or the veins of a leaf. And vou can see color - not just the obvious greens and golds and browns, but blue and red and purple hues revealed by the interplay of diffused light and shadow beneath dense canopy. In my work I try to surprise the viewer by highlighting aspects of nature that they may not recognize as real and to challenge them to look more carefully so that they can appreciate more of what nature has to offer." About the Instructor: Jeff Bramshreiber Jeff Bramschreiber has been drawing and painting for over forty years, and while he is primarily a pastelist, he also frequently works in acrylic, watercolor, silverpoint most dry media and even airbrush. His artworks hang in private collections throughout the United States and Europe and have received many awards. A local art advocate, he has served as an art club president, (East Valley Artists and Santa Clara Art Association), as a juror with nearly fifty shows to his credit, as treasurer and lecturer for Silicon Valley Open Studios, as a demonstrator and lecturer for many of the Bay Areas’ art clubs, colleges and museums. Jeff also worked at University Art San Jose for 21 years before its closing in 2018 as an assistant Manager, Frame Designer, and Community Art Liaison. Mr. Bramschreiber has also helped coordinate, organize, and participate in numerous local art shows, group shows and events throughout his career. Currently he is President of the Board of Trustees for the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, an exhibiting and “live paint” artist at Kaleid Gallery in Downtown San Jose; Jeff is also an art instructor for the Triton Museum of Art , The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, The Pacific Art League and The Villages Arts and Crafts Association. It’s a tribute to the four generations of my family that haunt these streets, a eulogy for an endlessly erased city that always pushes away what was or could have been. About the Collection The Same Streets Everyday explores the ever-shifting landscapes of the places that have become home, the mysteries that hide in the everyday, and the patterns and constants that emerge when you walk the same streets for years. It’s purposely taken wrong turns, worn out shoes, quiet hours, and cloudy days. It’s insomnia, trespassing, and a camera. The photos on the walls, presented in no particular order, were taken with over a dozen different cameras, span over a decade of time, and were all taken while walking the streets of San Jose. Your Instructor Vanessa Callanta Vanessa Callanta is a Bay Area based artist and Curator at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. From an early age, she showed a passion for art. She pursued this interest and earned an Associate’s Degree with High Honors from Mission College in studio arts, studying under accomplished artists and educators Mark Engel and George Rivera. She has also been fortunate enough to participate in workshops from the world-renowned artist Cuong Nguyen. Vanessa has had her art shown at the Vargas Gallery at Mission College, KALEID Gallery, Works/San Jose, Chopsticks Alley Art, the Triton Museum of Art, and in other group exhibitions at local businesses. She has also had the privilege of being selected to paint an Art Box for Sherman Oaks Elementary School in San Jose and has participated in chalk art festivals at Luna Park and the Triton Museum of Art. During her free time, Vanessa enjoys being creative and reading. She believes art should be accessible to everyone and that it is critical for us to express ourselves creatively.

EXHIBITION The Punctum Void: A Miha Sarani Retrospective Miha Sarani DATES: JAN 20 - MAY 12 YEAR: 2024 Previously on view in the Permanent Collection Gallery < Back OVERVIEW ADDITIONAL INFORMATION My work explores, and responds to the elements of everyday life - particularly by framing our collective existence, individual experiences, voyeuristic responses, and the idea of duality. I find playing with the formal elements helps me better visually represent these objectives. While the intention is to bring about an exploration of a dialogue with the past, I commonly engage in current issues; addressing cyclical occurrences throughout history, but with contemporary challenges. My art practice aims to create a juxtaposition of conceptual art and aesthetic value; thus visually combining what I believe to be the essence of art making as a philosophical pursuit. For this reason, reading of my work often includes both arbitrary and conventional signs, personal assumptions mixed with stylistic representation of post-modern content. My theoretical framing is to move my work beyond the hyped contemporary referent and trendy aesthetic which pay less attention to the content and more to approximation. My practice is also profoundly informed by my studies as an art historian, so I look to the old masters as well as new for inspiration. Still, I find myself most often returning to the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Marcel Duchamp, Martin Kippenberger, Anselm Kiefer, Philip Guston and Neo Rauch. Modern viewers, I believe, have become accustomed to having art dissected and served to them - which tends to devalue the work and the process. Although I enjoy contemporary art and admire many of its practitioners, I strive to create something with a deeper significance; a bridge between the ancient rituals and modern audience. Tamera Avery: Slipstream Tamera Avery Through January 5th Now on View in the Permanent Collection Gallery Plan Your Visit < Back Overview The Triton Museum of Art presents Tamera Avery: Slipstream by Bay Area Artist, Tamera Avery. At once surreal and sublime, Tamera Avery's monumental paintings feature masked and costumed figures situated in liminal spaces. From glacial edges to post-nuclear bunkers, these environments are imbued with both potential and uncertainty: within them, young individuals navigate unconventional paths, transforming everyday objects into symbolic armor. Tamera Avery: Slipstream will be showcased in the Permanent Collection Gallery. Artist Statement My work is a celebration of youth, where the young are the champions of change in flawed social, political, and environmental landscapes. Faced with ever-mounting global change, the young have the knowledge to understand what is at stake and—with their increasingly powerful voices—the ability to rearrange the balance of power. To shift this balance visually, my subjects wear masks and costumes that augment their agency and the space they take up. Originally prompted by folk carnivals celebrating the arrival of spring, I employ found images and objects along with homemade costumes to portray figures modest in composition but heroic in execution. Through a process starting with collage, isolated images function as vocabulary, deconstructing visual truths and reconstructing them into stories that call for action. Using imagery from the White House to Chernobyl, icebergs to abandoned ships, I work at the intersection of the current reality and the possibility of change to tell a story of hope in a landscape of despair—with armor-clad youth standing in the path of destruction. Artist Biography: Tamera Avery is a painter living and working in San Francisco who has exhibited widely across California, including at the De Young Museum. After an early career at the intersection of business and fashion, she turned to painting full-time, working with key artist-mentors at the San Francisco Art Institute and UC Berkeley Extension school.
